The replica is milled from Gunter with a CNC machine.

I too am using the Adafruit motor shield to automate the laser. I am using one of their stepper (200 step per rev) motors with one tactile button to rotate it forward and one to rotate it backwards.
I can send pictures of my rig and ardunino sketch if you want. I am curious as to what your rig and sketch looks like if you wouldnt mind sending me that information it would be appreciated. I am a novice at the arduino and laser scanning.
