It's a long time that I had in mind to scan a big and complex object. My question was: how accurate is David (working without panels)? Can I scan many pieces, from a big and articulated object, and marge all of them togheter, without problems or discrepancies?
Time ago I've proved to myself that David is great (precise enough), just scanning a little model of motorbike (with panles).
I've dismantle it and scanned the separated pieces. At the end, all the little props fit togheter perfectly, and I was able to rebuild the bike model into my 3D editing software. No problems.
Now: Ok, I haven't a real model of the Suzuki bike GSX 1300R, but I have (or better, I must to say I "had") an old Piaggio scooter, the "Sfera 50". The idea is to dismantel the scooter (is broke and stay sitted in my basement for many years) and scan all the separated pieces. For this purpose I need: a lot of time, 4-5 white spray bottles, David Laser Scanner without panles.
I've worked on it last Augost and a couple of week-end in September. Unfortunately I've no finish this project, till now, because my spare time is drastically reduce. I still need to scan some pieces. I hope to do the job soon as I can.
My initial thoughts were to open this thread only at the end of the whole work, but I'm scared to came too much later
And today I've read this post, so I'm encouraged to share my experience.
This is the Scooter:
During the dismantling:
All the pieces were coated and, if the surface was big and smooth, some markers were created on it for a better alignment:
To be continued...
