Dear DAVID friends,

We have some good news that we would like to share with you. :-)

*In This Newsletter*

    * Special Christmas Prices!
    * New DAVID Version 3.2!
    * Great SL Results!

*Special Christmas Prices*

Starting NOW, we have reduced all prices by 10%.
So take your chance and enter the world of 3D scanning at an even lower price - or upgrade your scanner with a new camera or laser! Need some whiting spray or calibration panels...? Now's the time!
This offer is valid until January 9.

Please note that due to inventory and holidays, the last packages will leave our house on December 21. We will start again fresh in January, but please understand that there may be some delays due to strong demand.

*New DAVID Version*

As usual, we are continuously improving our software. DAVID has now reached version 3.2 which has several big improvements, especially concerning Structured Light scanning.
It is now much easier and more comfortable to set up and calibrate the scanner. Even more important, scan results are much better - usually tweaking with the settings is not necessary any more. If you have a projector and a camera at hand, just give it a try!

DAVID Newsletter: DAVID 3 Released!

Dear DAVID Friends,

After a long time of development, we have some exciting news for you!

*In This Newsletter*

    * New DAVID Version 3
    * Structured Light Scanning
    * How to Print Your Scans in 3D
    * New Products: Blue Handheld Laser, Batteries for All Handheld Lasers
    * New Contact Page with World Map
    * Visit Us at VISION 2011

*New DAVID Version 3*

Voila: After more than a year of development, DAVID 3.0 is now available!
The most important innovation:
DAVID is the first and only software that supports both, "classic" Laser Scanning AND Structured Light Scanning! The Structured Light method is presented below.
Also, the completely new user interface makes DAVID3 more flexible, extendable and user-friendly.
Of course the new version is compatible to the same hardware:
cameras, lasers, calibration patterns...

As always we offer a Free Version for everyone. Please feel free to test everything! Only saving results is limited. Download: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/?section=Downloads

If you would like to purchase a license, please open http://www.david-laserscanner.com/?section=Buy

Of course if you already own a DAVID 2.x license or original USB key, you can upgrade to DAVID 3 at a lower price. Upgrade procedure details can be found at http://www.david-laserscanner.com/wiki/david3_user_manual/upgrade_2_to_3

To purchase your upgrade, please contact your local reseller or visit our shop: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/?section=Buy

*Structured Light Scanning*

Structured Light (SL) makes scanning faster and easier! For this method you can use a standard video projector instead of the line laser.
This animation demonstrates the setup:
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/gfx/start/Setup_SL_animated.gif
The video projector is connected to the PC and DAVID 3 uses it to illuminate the object with several stripe patterns. Click "Start" - wait a few seconds - see 3D result on screen!
Our Mexican reseller VISI Series has already tried it and made a short demo video (thank you!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijyiAkR9SHY

Of course an SL setup needs to be optimized and calibrated (first the camera, then the laser). Our DAVID 3 user manual will guide you through it: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/wiki/david3_user_manual/overview

So what are the pros and cons of Structured Light Scanning compared to Laser Scanning:

+ Scanning without calibration panels in the background! (Panels are only initially required for camera and projector calibration.)
+ Much faster
+ One-click scan
+ No moving parts / no influence of hand tremors etc.
+ Can use photo camera, e.g. DSLR (still not recommended, but will be great and comfortable with a future DAVID version - work in progress)

- Projector prices are dropping, but they are still more expensive than lasers
- Room needs to be rather dark, usually darker than required for laser
- Not suitable for very small details on small objects because projectors usually can't be focused to very short distances

You should definitely give it a try!

*How to Print Your Scans in 3D*

Have you ever thought about printing your scans into a solid sculpture/model? As you probably know, 3D printers exist but are still quite expensive...

Therefore we would like to recommend the 3D printing services of our two partners:

RapidObject: http://www.rapidobject-shop.com/en/products
All In 3D: http://www.all-in-3d.de/allin3d_en.html

*New Products: Blue Handheld Laser, Batteries for All Handheld Lasers*

Since blue light has a very short wavelength, blue line laser can focus their light even thinner than green ones. That is great for scanning small objects when you really need to capture the finest surface details.
In addition to our wired blue laser modules, we now offer the brand new LE405-5-3-F-S(22x100):
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p120_Blue-Line-Laser--adjustable-focus--with-battery-CR132A--405nm--5.html.
It is battery operated and thus more flexible and easier to handle. We recommend that you use it together with our monochrome CCD camera:
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p94_DAVID-USB-CCD-Monochrome-Camera--XGA--with-Lens.html.

Many of our customers have been asking for spare batteries for our lasers. We have now added that battery type to our shop, so you don't need to waste any more time finding a supplier.
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p122_Panasonic-Battery-CR123-3V-Lithium.html

*New Contact Page with World Map*

Although our colored world map may give the impression: We are NOT seeking world domination.
In fact the map on our new Contact Page gives you a quick overview and access to distributors in your country. Just click on your country in the map or select it from the drop down menu below.
Or would you like to get in touch with the DAVID company directly? Our contact details are just below the map.
Please take a look at http://www.david-vision-systems.de/index.php/contact

*Visit us on VISION 2011*

VISION is the internationally leading trade fair for industrial image processing and identification technologies.
This year the DAVID company will be exhibiting there for the first time.
Please join us in Hall 6, Booth 6A55.10 and be one of the first to see our new product developments in action!
For further information please see
http://www.messe-stuttgart.de/cms/index.php?id=92444&L=1

That's it for today, enjoy the new version and look forward to more to come! :-)

Dear DAVID friends,

It has been a long time since our last newsletter. Of course the DAVID team has not been idle! This newsletter will give you a brief overview of recent developments, new products etc. Enjoy reading!

*In This Newsletter*

    * DAVID Survey: Please help us improve - You Can Win a Price!
    * Improved Calibration Pattern
    * New Products: Calibration Panels, Blue Lasers, IR Lasers, and more
    * We Proudly Present: Our References
    * Simple and Free Software Update

*DAVID Survey: Please help us improve - You Can Win a Price*

We are conducting an online survey in order to improve our DAVID-Laserscanner. We would like to ask you to take part in our survey - it will only take a few minutes!
And you can win: In return for your support, we will raffle a DAVID Starter-Kit and a green line laser among all participants.

You can directly start the survey here:
English: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/survey
German: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/umfrage
Please participate! :-)

*Improved Calibration Pattern*

A few months ago we have developed a new calibration pattern that is easier and more flexible to use:
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/wiki/user_manual/camera_calibration#calibration_procedure
The "V3" pattern is symmetric and consists of more markers, but: Not all markers need to be seen by the camera!
This makes it more comfortable to adopt your setup - you can change the camera distance without requiring a new calibration printout each time. It fits better for both 4:3 and 16:9 cameras and allows a more precise camera calibration.
Of course, the old pattern is still supported by the software - DAVID will recognize automatically which pattern you are using.
Give it a try! The new pattern is included as PDF in the software download and as ready-made panels in our online shop.

*New Products: Calibration Panels, Blue Lasers, IR Lasers, and More*

In the last weeks we have added a few new products to our online shop:

1. Due to continuous demand, we are now offering the calibration panels from the Starter Kit separately. The set contains the new pattern in four different sizes printed on solid cardboard, and it comes with a base plate and precise angle brackets to stabilize the setup. It is suitable for scanning objects between 1 and 40 cm in size.
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p88_DAVID-Laserscanner-Calibration-Panels-Set.html

2. WHITE! Our Whiting Spray is fine for most objects, but the whiting layer may be too thick or rough for smaller object with tiny surface details. In that case, our new Coating Spray will help: It creates an extremely thin white layer that easily preserves surface details below 0.2mm. See for yourself:
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p105_Mattierungs-Spray.html

3. BLUE! Since blue light has a shorter wavelength, the brand new LE405-10-5-F Blue Line Lasers can focus their light even thinner than green ones. That's great for scanning small objects when you really need to capture the finest surface details. We recommend to use it with our monochrome CCD cameras.
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p103_Blauer-Linienlaser--fokussierbar--405nm--10mW--90---90-deg-.html

4. INFRARED! LC808-5-3-F Infrared Line Laser: You can't see the laser light, but your camera can! This makes handling a little more difficult, but is useful e.g. for scanning an open human eye.
https://ssl.david-vision-systems.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p101_Linienlaser-808nm--5mW--Laser-Klasse-1--3V--14x55mm---90-deg-.html

5. BRIGHT RED! The new LE650-16-3-F-S is a hand-held line laser module with 16 mW laser power which is suitable for scanning larger objects or in brighter environments than the 5mW lasers. The included battery allows operation where no wall power supply is available.

*We Proudly Present: Our References*

Beside many private users and small businesses, over 100 universities and companies around the world are using DAVID-Laserscanner! We are very proud of our customer base and have collected a References page. Feel free to take a look:
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/?section=References

*Simple and Free Software Update*

The new calibration pattern is just one of several developments. As always, we have been continuously improving the DAVID software. Please update to DAVID 2.6.1 from our download page
<http://www.david-laserscanner.com/?section=Downloads>.

    * *Free Edition:* Just download, install, and start the new version.

    * *Professional Edition:* Download and install the new
version and re-use your previous 2.x license file.

    * *Professional USB Edition / Starter-Kit:* Simply download and launch
the DAVID Setup Installer. It will find your DAVID USB key and offer
      to update it automatically.

That's it for the moment. Please don't forget to participate in our survey. THANK YOU!

*Our whole team wishes you a lot of fun and success with DAVID!*

Mesh2Flash: 3D Internet Presentation for Free!

If you want to present your 3D models on the Internet, e.g. in your online shop or a forum, we have just the right tool for you: Mesh2Flash! Simply embedded in your web page, this little Flash program allows the viewer to freely rotate and zoom the 3D object by mouse. Mesh2Flash really renders the object live, instead of showing just a few fixed shots like many other \"3D\" viewers do. It will directly load scans made by DAVID or other OBJ or DAE files - with or without texture. Only Adobe Flash Player is required, which >98% of your visitors have installed anyway.

Some examples and helpful information can be found in our Wiki and Forum.

New CCD Cameras, Laser, and Whiting Spray

We proudly present our brand-new high-quality industrial CCD cameras!

These camera models have been specially designed for scanning with DAVID. They are based on models from a German brand manufacturer which have been proving to give excellent scan results for years! Their low-noise CCD chips capture XGA resolution at 30 FPS, thus allowing high-precision scans with hardly any noise or waves in just a few seconds. Together with their high-quality Pentax lens, they are aiming at most demanding users. These cameras aren\'t cheap, but definitely worth the money!

Currently we offer two models, a monochrome and a color camera. The monochrome model captures the laser line at a slightly better resolution, but of course is not able to create a colored texture shot of the object\'s surface without additional filters. Both models offer a trigger input which may be used in automated setups, e.g. for synchronization with a stepper motor.

Scanning objects with dark or shiny surfaces has always been difficult. Therefore we now offer a convenient Whiting Spray for a low price. A thin layer of whiting will make scanning easy, preserving even small surface details. The whiting can be washed off easily in most cases. However please be warned not to use the spray on expensive or sensitive surfaces - first make sure you will be able to remove it perfectly!

Furthermore there is a new line laser model: The LE650-16-3-F-S(22x100)90 with included battery and adjustable focus emits a strong and thin red line with a power of 16mW. This helps scanning of large objects or in difficult environments - even when there is no wall socket available.

All products and detailed information can be found in our online shop. By the way, credit card payment is now possible!

New DAVID Version 2.4.5

Of course development of DAVID is successfully moving forward! We would like to mention two new features:

Mesh Density Reduction is very helpful for preparing a scan for Mesh2Flash. It can reduce the number of vertices and triangles significantly, making download and rendering speed much more comfortable. Of course mainly flat surface parts will be reduced, edges and borders of the mesh will maintain their shape. And the texture will not be touched either, which is important for a nice visual impression and may compensate for a low-resolution triangle mesh...

Want to scan faster? Structured Light may be an alternative to a slowly sweeping laser line. The new DAVID version supports this method - it\'s still experimental, but works fine already!
The basic idea is to use a video projector to illuminate the scene with a few (e.g. 12) different stripe patterns. If you use a still photo camera, e.g. an SLR, you can shoot those 12 images manually in very high quality. The software will extract detailed 3D data from only these few images.
More details can be found in this Forum thread.

Some more small improvements and bug fixes are listed as usual in the changelog.

New DAVID Version 2.4.2
=========================

Finally, the new grabber has found its way into DAVID! It makes DAVID 2.4
compatible to more different cameras and performs faster on most hardware.
Give it a try!
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/?section=Downloads

As usual, there are some more nice improvements both for beginners and
pros, like:

*Increased precision*
We have improved lens un-distortion and calculation of the 3D laser light
plane position, reducing deformations and waviness of scan data.

*Default camera parameters included*
Setting up the camera parameters is one of the most difficult steps
for beginners. For some camera models, DAVID has default parameters that
will help you get started. Of course some adjustments will be necessary,
since every setup is different...

*COMmunication*
For those who automate their scanning setups, DAVID has improved
capability of communicating over a (virtual) COM port in both directions.
You can control many DAVID functions remotely, or even synchronize single
camera frames to laser motor steps, which is especially interesting for
Scanning Without Background!
Details can be found in the user manual:

DAVID Starter-Kit Finally Available!
======================================

High-precision 3D scanning at an unbeatable price! We proudly present the DAVID Starter-Kit, a package that contains everything you need to set up
your own 3D Scanner:
  * The best webcam we could find
  * A great, wireless line laser module with high-quality optics and adjustable focus
  * Precise, solid calibration panels in different sizes
  * and of course DAVID-Laserscanner software (full Professional Edition) on a USB flash drive

=======================
New DAVID Version 2.3
=======================

DAVID Version 2.3 is available for download now! It has some improvements that are interesting both for beginners and experts:

Small but useful: Scan Quality Feedback.
One of the major difficulties for beginners is adjusting the camera settings like exposure and focus. Now DAVID helps you optimize these parameters by showing an evaluation of the image and laser line quality during scanning. Just try it! See manual pages for details.

For Professionals: DAVID controls your motor-driven laser. As introduced in our last newsletter, it is helpful to move the laser by motor. This is more convenient, and allows you to scan without background panels.
Now,DAVID is able to control your laser by sending some configurable commands through a (virtual) COM port.
For the time being, you will have to build some micro-controller based hardware to drive your laser, but we are planning to offer some complete solution in the future.

Thanks to our great community members, the new version offers two more languages. So DAVID\\\'s user interface and user manual are now available in
English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish!

Have Fun!

New DAVID Version 2.2
=======================

DAVID Version 2.2 is available for download now! Here is a list of the main new features and improvements:

*Easier Use, Especially for Beginners*:
  * The scanned data are now filtered automatically. When you change
the filter settings, you will see their effect directly in 3D.
  * A magnifying glass in the live camera image helps you to adjust
camera and laser focus (toggle with left mouse button).
  * DAVID now comes in a convenient Windows installer.

*Multi-Language Interface*:
DAVID's user interface and user manual are available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and new: Polish!

*Scan Without Background*:
Under certain conditions, DAVID can now scan without background planes! However, you will need a precisely repeatable laser motion, e.g. by using a motor-driven laser or by projecting a moving line with a video projector. The basic procedure, pros and cons, and some important remarks about using this feature can be found in this user manual page:
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/wiki/user_manual/scanning_without_background

There are some more improvements and bugfixes included in the new version, so an update (both Free and Professional Edition) is definitely recommended! See the complete list of changes here:

DAVID Version 2.1 is available for download now! It contains the following
new features and improvements:

*Global Fine Registration*: This function can improve the overall alignment
of multiple scans. It aligns all scans to each other, trying to find a
global optimum.

*Alignment Texture Support*: Texture can be used to facilitate automatic
scan alignment. This helps to auto-align surfaces that have no remarkable
structure.

*Undo and Redo*: All scan alignment actions can be undone any time (Coarse
Registration, Fine Registration, Global Fine Registration, manual scan
movements).

*Advanced Settings Menu*: Lots of parameters can be configured now, so
experienced users can adopt DAVID to their requirements - e.g. defining
special scanning setups with freely configurable background planes.

*Improved Manual Cleaning Tool*: A polygonal selection mode and selection
inversion let you remove undesired mesh parts more comfortably.

*Reduced Memory Consumption*: DAVID can handle even more and higher
resolution scans for alignment and fusion.

*Portuguese Translation*: Dialogues and menus are now available in English,
German, French, Italian, and new: Portuguese.

*And many more*: Lots of small improvements, some bugfixes...
A full list of changes can be found in the file "changes.txt" which is

DAVID Version 2.0!

After more than 6 months of work, DAVID Version 2.0 is finally available!

These are the most significant new features:

Texture Fusion: Now DAVID can not only grab textures for each scan, but also align and fuse the textures along with the scans!

Improved Comfort: DAVID 2.0 remembers the different camera settings for calibration, scanning, and texture grabbing, thus you do not need to adjust them again and again! Also you can forward your scans directly to Shapefusion with only one click. In Shapefusion you can combine and un-combine scans for easier handling. Et cetera...

Multi-Language Support: In addition to the English version, the user interface and the user manual of DAVID are now available in French, German, and Italian. A Spanish version is coming soon!

Manual cleaning tool: This tool allows you to remove undesired surface parts from your scans very easily with your mouse.

Increased maximal resolution of Simple and Poisson fusion.

New design: Looks great! And the new colored Scan Result window gives a better impression of the scan quality already during scanning.
...
...

A full list of changes can be found in "changes.txt" which is included in the download as usual.

Furthermore, as an alternative to the download version of DAVID, you can now choose to buy DAVID on a 1 GB USB flash drive. This allows you to carry DAVID around with you and start it directly from the USB drive on any computer!

Always have a good scan!

New DAVID Version 1.6:

1. Scan alignment mode \"Rotation around axis\" allows
to specify a known angle of rotation (useful in conjunction with a turn table).

2. Command File Interpreter in DAVID-Shapefusion: You can script theShapefusion procedure and let it run without any user interaction.

3. Laser plane calculation is now more precise even with strong lens distortions.

4. \"Fast\" scanning mode (may increase scanning speed on slow PCs without loss of precision).

Additionally we have updated the \"AngelScan\" video, which you can use to test DAVID without needing your own setup. We have created the new video with better camera and laser hardware, so it shows much better what great results can be obtained with DAVID!

And don\'t forget to have a look into our new DAVID Laser Shop! here you will find inexpensive line laser modules, which have proven to be perfectly suitable for laser scanning with DAVID.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

DAVID 1.5 - small but mighty!

To put it in a nutshell:
1) Enhanced sub-pixel detection of laser line and increased scanning accuracy.
2) Alternative 'Poisson' mesh fusion method, which is more robust against inaccurate scan alignment and which gives water-tight results.
3) 'Combine'-Button for grouping/combining of multiple scans to one scan.
4) Much faster fine registration.
5) Possibility to save all scans in one file (without fusion step).

Better and better every time...
We have just released DAVID-Laserscanner and DAVID-Shapefusion Version 1.4.

Once again, you will find some useful improvements:

The new version allows you to grab textures and to view the texturized model in 3D. DAVID-Shapefusion loads and displays the texture when you add a scan. A texture fusion is still under construction.

DAVID-Shapefusion 1.4 now includes an OBJ-, PLY-, and a new STL-export filter. STL stands for "Standard Tessellation Language" and is a common 3d format that can be imported e.g. by many CNC milling machines.

Furthermore, you will find a new experimental "thin shadow line" mode for using a shadow line instead of a laser line, and many more improvements like an FPS indicator and buttons inside of the 3D window.

Good scanning!

We are happy to announce that DAVID-Laserscanner V1.3 has just been released! Besides some improvements like an UNDO-function and the possibility to reload your saved meshes, it includes a trial version of DAVID-Shapefusion.

DAVID-Shapefusion allows you to merge/stitch multiple scans that have been made from different sides. The surface fragments will be fused smoothly into one single 360 degree triangle mesh at a user-defined resolution.

Please buy a DAVID-Shapefusion license and support us in keeping the DAVID project alive! Nevertheless, the laser scanner part of the software is and will remain free of charge (including the export function of single scans).
