New DAVID Version 3.8

The new DAVID version has a number of small improvements that are worth updating to. The GUI is now available in 10 languages (English, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and new are: Chinese, Czech, Estonian, French and Polish) - Thank you to all who have submitted a translation!

You can create screen shots of your 3D scan result by pressing F12. Also we have lots of small improvements that make DAVID easier and safer to work with.
A more detailed changelog is listed in our wiki.

As always, updates from all previous versions 3.x are free. Just use the auto-update, or download and run the 3.8 setup installer from here.

Report: DAVID in Munich

Last month the DAVID Team went to Munich and presented our products on the "Laser - World of Photonics" fair. For four days, hundreds of people visited our stand and saw DAVID live in action.

We had 4 scanner setups: one hand-held laser scanner (Starter-Kit 2) and three SLS-1, configured for different sizes, so we could scan whatever people brought along: Coins, fingerprints, jewelry, but also our visitors' faces, a church bell, some larger industrial parts, etc.

New: One of our setups contained a turntable prototype! It allows DAVID to scan an object 360° by just one click on "Start". Our human skull model got 360°-scanned several hundred times during the exhibition...

We Present CAD/CAM/CAE Expert EKONS

In the last years we have been very busy building up a world-wide reseller network. As the map shows, today we have resellers in around 60 countries. This helps us distribute our products in many regions and target groups, but also it improves service and support - our resellers can help customers in many languages, and some are specialized in more areas around 3D than we can be.

Showcase: Scans of Tiny Objects

Fantastic! Our forum user Stecma has scanned lots of very small objects and achieved a high level of detail. He has used the SLS-1 scanner hardware with the latest version of the DAVID software.

Most of his objects are just 2-5 cm small, but he has also scanned larger objects. The results are always very good and prove what can be achieved with the SLS-1.
These scales are possible because our projector is equipped with special optics that allow focussing to extremely short distances, starting at 90mm.

DAVID 3.7: 64-bit, Simplified Calibration, and more

A few weeks ago we have released DAVID 3.7 with several improvements:

64-bit: Now DAVID includes two executables, 32 and 64 bit. In 64-bit operating systems (Windows 7 or 8) DAVID can use much more memory, so you can work with more scans at the same time. Also the general performance (3D view, alignment, ...) is much faster.

Simplified SL Calibration: In DAVID 3.7 you can calibrate your whole scanner (camera and projector) with one click. This makes the setup procedure faster and easier.
New Quality Filter: DAVID has a new intelligent "Quality Check" against erroneous scan data. Depending on the object shape and texture, optical effects can make some 3D points imprecise. DAVID can detect where this probably happens, and remove the imprecise points. This makes cleaning and alignment easier and better.

New Alignment Option:"Contact Pair Selection" allows you to specify overlapping surface regions with two simple mouse clicks. In this way you can easily align scans being too regular or symmetric for automatic alignment.
The size of your defined contact region depends on how much you zoom, see details on this page of our updated user manual. It's really easy!

Exhibitions in Germany: DAVID at Laser (Munich) and Fabcon 3.D (Erfurt)

Next month there are two opportunities to see DAVID live in action! We will present our scanners at the "Laser World of Photonics" fair in Munich, Germany (May 13-16). If everything works as expected, we will also show a prototype of a new product that makes scanning easier and faster...

Showcase and Scanning Contest

These scans show what DAVID can do, even with a webcam: Our forum member JRdezigns has made a great series of scans of action figures.

He used a Logitech Pro9000 webcam and a projector similar to our Acer K11+.

However, scanning living human bodies is not so easy. An SL scan only takes a few seconds, so the problem of movements can be avoided if the person relaxes and has a head rest to lean on. Single scans can be obtained in good quality, showing even fine surface details like wrinkles. But scanning 360° is harder: The human body has joints and it's difficult to keep exactly the same pose between scans. E.g. when turning around to scan the back, you will probably turn or tilt your head - then the single scans won't fit together in the regions around your neck.
We have already seen some great scans of humans in our forum, but we want more!

Our long-term forum member, supporter and good friend Mattia Mercante has started a contest for scanning female portraits. The challenge is to scan females 360° from head to shoulders or chest as precisely as possible. The winners (first and second place) can win a 3D print of their scan.

Note: This contest is NOT about scanning the most beautiful naked woman. In the forum there have been some misunderstandings and disputes, mainly because of the ambiguous meanings of the English word "bust" (here: sculpture, not woman's breast). A detailed 360° scan showing an interesting facial expression of an old wrinkled lady will get more points than a smooth scan of a beauty queen's face. This is about arts – vulgar contents will not be accepted. In Mattia's words, "no one will judge the women's beauty, but ONLY the scan result quality according to the difficulty level and complexity (hair, clothes, poses, open eyes, ...)".

We are looking forward to some great artistic contributions. The deadline has been extended to June 8. Please join in and show what you can! :-)

Improved Coating Spray

Our new 3D Coating Spray is ideal for scanning dark or glossy objects, e.g. shiny metal or black plastic. It will create a very thin white layer which preserves even fine surface details and makes scanning easy.

The spray can be brushed off, however please use it with care and test on non-sensitive surfaces first.

Showcase: Dinosaur

Take a look at this: Our forum member Christian_Mendez has made a great scan of a toy Allosaurus model! He has used a self-made scanner setup similar to our SLS-1.

This object is not easy to scan because it has many undercuts, especially some areas between the arms and legs are difficult to obtain. Also with his tail the dinosaur is quite long, so in order to get fine surface details it was necessary to scan smaller patches and combine them in the DAVID software. It takes some time to get such a great result, but we are always working on improvements in our software to make the process easier and faster...

In the end, Christian has used Blender to create realistic renderings. Kudos! :-)

Improved SLS-1: Double Resolution

Starting now, we are shipping the SLS-1 with a new camera, DAVID-CAM-3-M. Its resolution (1280x960) is two times better, it has a really crisp image and allows scan resolutions of 0.1% of the object size (down to 40 �m)! Also we include a new megapixel camera lens from Computar - better image quality and easier to handle.

Unfortunately this means we had to increase the price. But this improvement is definitely worth it - the SLS-1 still has a great value for money! And with the Christmas discount, you nearly get the old price...

This new camera will be available separately very soon. It is our definite recommendation for a Structured Light scanning!

Impressions from the Euromold Fair

We have just returned from the Euromold fair last week. It was great to meet so many old and new DAVID users!

Our booth was focused on the SLS-1. Many visitors knew our laser scanners and were impressed by our Structured Light scanner and its improvements in comfort, flexibility and scan quality.
Also, many new applications and challenges for DAVID have been discussed. We have met many people who were astonished that the SLS-1 can obtain such a good quality at such a low price!

Some brought test objects like dentures, jewelry, artwork, which we have scanned right there. Of course we know our limits: Some glossy objects had to be sprayed, and resolutions below 40 �m cannot be achieved with our hardware. Well, not yet...

Also we had prepared a setup for face scanning (stool and headrest) so people could relax and hold perfectly still for the scanning time (around 5 seconds). Even though the environment light conditions in the exhibition hall were far from ideal, we have made some very good face scans!

Now you can buy our SL projector K11+ (which is part of our SLS-1 scanner package) separately. This projector is is just perfect for Structured Light scanning with DAVID!
Its unique feature is the huge focus range: We build in a special optics for focus distances from below 90mm to "infinity". This allows high-res scans of objects smaller than 50mm, but also scanning large objects is possible. We have seen no other projector that is able to project patterns fine enough for scanning even fingerprints in 3D!

The resolution of 858*600 is sufficient for high-detailed scans, especially with DAVID's intelligent sub-pixel accuracy algorithms. The projector has various inputs, so it can be connected to any desktop or laptop computer.
Also we have improved its tripod mount, so the projector can be reliably mounted on a (mobile) scanner platform.

With an industrial camera, a high-quality lens, a specially adapted projector and solid calibration panels, the SLS-1 is suitable for industrial applications, however still affordable for ambitious hobbyists. If you want to present your 3D models on the Internet, e.g. in your online shop or a forum, we have just the right tool for you: Mesh2Flash! Simply embedded in your web page, this little Flash program allows the viewer to freely rotate and zoom the 3D object by mouse. Mesh2Flash really renders the object live, instead of showing just a few fixed shots like many other \"3D\" viewers do. It will directly load scans made by DAVID or other OBJ or DAE files - with or without texture. Only Adobe Flash Player is required, which >98% of your visitors have installed anyway. Some examples and helpful information can be found in our Wiki and Forum. New CCD Cameras, Laser, and Whiting Spray We proudly present our brand-new high-quality industrial CCD cameras! These camera models have been specially designed for scanning with DAVID. They are based on models from a German brand manufacturer which have been proving to give excellent scan results for years! Their low-noise CCD chips capture XGA resolution at 30 FPS, thus allowing high-precision scans with hardly any noise or waves in just a few seconds. Together with their high-quality Pentax lens, they are aiming at most demanding users. These cameras aren\'t cheap, but definitely worth the money! Currently we offer two models, a monochrome and a color camera. The monochrome model captures the laser line at a slightly better resolution, but of course is not able to create a colored texture shot of the object\'s surface without additional filters. Both models offer a trigger input which may be used in automated setups, e.g. for synchronization with a stepper motor. Scanning objects with dark or shiny surfaces has always been difficult. Therefore we now offer a convenient Whiting Spray for a low price. A thin layer of whiting will make scanning easy, preserving even small surface details. The whiting can be washed off easily in most cases. However please be warned not to use the spray on expensive or sensitive surfaces - first make sure you will be able to remove it perfectly! Furthermore there is a new line laser model: The LE650-16-3-F-S(22x100)90 with included battery and adjustable focus emits a strong and thin red line with a power of 16mW. This helps scanning of large objects or in difficult environments - even when there is no wall socket available. All products and detailed information can be found in our online shop. By the way, credit card payment is now possible! New DAVID Version 2.4.5 Of course development of DAVID is successfully moving forward! We would like to mention two new features: Mesh Density Reduction is very helpful for preparing a scan for Mesh2Flash. It can reduce the number of vertices and triangles significantly, making download and rendering speed much more comfortable. Of course mainly flat surface parts will be reduced, edges and borders of the mesh will maintain their shape. And the texture will not be touched either, which is important for a nice visual impression and may compensate for a low-resolution triangle mesh... Want to scan faster? Structured Light may be an alternative to a slowly sweeping laser line. The new DAVID version supports this method - it\'s still experimental, but works fine already! The basic idea is to use a video projector to illuminate the scene with a few (e.g. 12) different stripe patterns. If you use a still photo camera, e.g. an SLR, you can shoot those 12 images manually in very high quality. The software will extract detailed 3D data from only these few images. These are the most significant new features: Texture Fusion: Now DAVID can not only grab textures for each scan, but also align and fuse the textures along with the scans! Improved Comfort: DAVID 2.0 remembers the different camera settings for calibration, scanning, and texture grabbing, thus you do not need to adjust them again and again! Also you can forward your scans directly to Shapefusion with only one click. In Shapefusion you can combine and un-combine scans for easier handling. Et cetera... Multi-Language Support: In addition to the English version, the user interface and the user manual of DAVID are now available in French, German, and Italian. A Spanish version is coming soon! Better and better every time... We have just released DAVID-Laserscanner and DAVID-Shapefusion Version 1.4. Once again, you will find some useful improvements: The new version allows you to grab textures and to view the texturized model in 3D. DAVID-Shapefusion loads and displays the texture when you add a scan. A texture fusion is still under construction. DAVID-Shapefusion 1.4 now includes an OBJ-, PLY-, and a new STL-export filter. STL stands for "Standard Tessellation Language" and is a common 3d format that can be imported e.g. by many CNC milling machines. Furthermore, you will find a new experimental "thin shadow line" mode for using a shadow line instead of a laser line, and many more improvements like an FPS indicator and buttons inside of the 3D window. We are happy to announce that DAVID-Laserscanner V1.3 has just been released! Besides some improvements like an UNDO-function and the possibility to reload your saved meshes, it includes a trial version of DAVID-Shapefusion. DAVID-Shapefusion allows you to merge/stitch multiple scans that have been made from different sides. The surface fragments will be fused smoothly into one single 360 degree triangle mesh at a user-defined resolution. Please buy a DAVID-Shapefusion license and support us in keeping the DAVID project alive! Nevertheless, the laser scanner part of the software is and will remain free of charge (including the export function of single scans). So have fun with DAVID!

In our download section you will find the beta test version of DAVID-Laserscanner version 1.3. This version comes together with a new mesh stitching tool, which is called DAVID-Shapefusion. DAVID-Shapefusion combines an easy-to-use user-driven outlier removal, an automatic and semi-automatic surface registration, and a noise reducing surface fusion method. The result is a smoothed 360 degree triangle mesh of your 3D model. Give it a try...
